Hi! I'm an embroidery artist and sewing tutor based in the Victorian seaside town of Penarth.
I’m fascinated by the past as a subject for embroidery art pieces, though I like to add a contemporary twist.
I have recently completed a collection of stitched pictures, which are based on original sketches and photographs of shops and scenes of Victorian and Edwardian Penarth. They were recently exhibited in Penarth, and will be on show at the Swansea Museum on August 18th and 19th.
One of the pictures in this collection is of our old haberdashery shop in Glebe Street, just as it was in 1911.
I begin with old photographs and my own sketches and watercolours, then set about interpreting them using a combination of collage applique, free-motion, and hand embroidery techniques. The process requires a bit of research regarding period features, such as colours of clothing and buildings, or the style of typography on shops' signage.
I like each piece to tell a story about the people and events included in the subject material. Where possible, I like to incorporate vintage fabrics sourced from my local town. Sometimes my work is unashamedly nostalgic but it always has heart!
Currently I’m focusing on a new collection, the subject being my own family’s photographs from the 70's. I’ve just finished a piece based on a photograph taken whilst on holiday in Cornwall. Typically, this has a story to tell.
I welcome commissions with prices on application. The starting fee is generally £200 for an approximate A3 size piece of work.
I am also available as a tutor and can come to you and your venue, or you can pop to our beautiful vintage-inspired sewing studio in Penarth!
"I love sewing.
It's like therapy – a chance to get lost in creating, playing, and forgetting all about
the daily chaos.
The touch of the fabric, choosing colours and print
and seeing something new come into being. Pure joy."
